I've hit the wall with the amount of subquestions in my survey (units at a University) - 604. How many do you think I can go to on mysql on a Mac?

Hi, pksupport,

you have 604 subquestions in on multiple question? Or in one array?

Or do I misunderstand?

Best regards
Joffm

I mean in total in the survey. I only know this because I exported the survey and import it to mess around with it and it showed that figure on the import. I'd say most questions have 50 sub questions. I deleted one question which I had hidden and got under the limit - whatever that may be.

Hi, pksupport,

so please read the manual about the limitations.
And there are a few topics about that here, like www.limesurvey.org/forum/installation-a-...tions-problem#149770
I am not absolutely sure, but there is something about 1500 (+-) columns in the answer table.

Best regards
Joffm

Thanks Joffm - I really appreciate the time you spent to reply. I seem to have skated under the limit. Of course, in an actual survey, you would never have 60 subquestions. As usual, I'm using LS for a job it was probably never designed to do. But I love it!

LS itself doesn't pose a limit to questions, subquestions, etc. However, the underlying databases do and depending on the database engine used and a few other factors this can be as low as 1000 columns or less. There is an ongoing discussion about this and the chosen database layout, as it limits the feasibility of huge surveys with a lot of matrix or multiple choice questions. If you have a few of them with quite a few answer options per question, you can run into the limit quite quickly. E.g. ask two question like "countries you have already visited" and "Countries you would like to visit". Wikipedia says that there are currently 206 sovereign states in the world, so with those two questions you are already over 400 columns. A few other long multiple / matrix questions and you can reach the limit of 1000 quite quickly.
