Pair of questions randomly was created by ettchen91
Hello everyone,

I already found great information of sorting questions randomely.

But now I have a specific question.

I want to give a pair of two questions randomely. So question pair 1.1 and 1.2 and pair 2.1 and 2.2. Is it possible to do that and if yes how?

I would be happy about your help!

Hi,
You may randomize groups of questions. Put Q1.1 and Q1.2 into one group of questions and Q2.1 and Q2.2 into second group of questions and assign both groups a number in the filed: "Randomization group:".

As Elisa said "...assign both groups a number in the filed: "Randomization group:".". Please refer to the manual - manual.limesurvey.org/Creating_a_questio..._group_randomization

Hello everyone,

thank you for your help!

But I'm not sure if the answer is what I really need.

I want to analyze the order of items.
Example:

1. long text - short text
or
2. short text - long text

If I randomize the questions in two different groups I have the problem that a question randomization of
1. long text - long text
and
2. short text - short text can arise.
That's not good because I want to analyse the order of the items.

Elisa and the homepage said:
"To do that just enter a string into the field 'Randomization group'. You will need to enter that same string in all the other groups who you want to randomize and which will then appear in a random order when taking the survey."

Maybe I don't understand that right but I tried to put numbers in the "randomization group" field for every group and put the same number in the two groups I want to randomize. It is not working. Was that wrong?
And it says "...will then appear in a random order when taking the survey." But I don't need a random order of the two groups.
I need group 1 or group 2.

I'm not sure if you can understand what my problem is but I hope you could help me again.

Thank you very much!

Hi, ettchen,
here is a sample survey which does the following:
Randomize two groups G1 and G2
G1 contains two questions in order "long - short"
G2 contains two questions in order "short -long"

These two groups are shown in randomized order.
Of course (it's at random) you have to test several times to see the effect.

Please have a look.
You see how to set the value of randomization group.

Best regards

Hi, ettchen,

there is a different approach, if it's only to display the two questions randomly.

1st question: equation to create a random number (1,2). R1
2nd question: short text question with relevance set to "R1==1""
3rd question: long text question with relevance 1
4th question: again short text question with relevance "R1==2"

That's all.
Sample survey attached.

BTW: The formula in the equation could be shorter: {rand(1,2)}
But in this case this random number would be changed each time the respondent goes back to the first page.
Therefore it is: {if(!is_empty(R1),R1,rand(1,2))}
Meaning:
If the random number (R1) is not empty, keep it, else create a random number.

Best regards
Joffm

Hi, ettchen,
one last remark, though it's obvious.
You have to set the equation question to "hidden".
I missed that in the sample.

I am glad I could help.

Everything worked thank you very much!

I have another short question.

I want to do the same in anouther group.

I can't use R1 again, but if I use another number like R6 it is not working.

Can you tell my what I did wrong?

Hi, ettchen,

strange. Looks absolutely correct.
What happens if you close the survey and open again.

Best regards
Joffm

P.S. Can you provide a sample?

Hello Jffm,

I found my mistake. I didn't put the question at the beginning, that's why the R6 was red!

Thank you very much!
