Email not sent to new user

Unfortunately there is no way to test the email settings in Limesurvey (send a test mail) and if I recall right it worked before.
Is there a way I can find out what went wrong?
I will try with a different email now, to see if the problem is on the other end, but usually this shouldn't create this error message, right?

Then : go to ssh
Create a new user with look at tail.
tail /var/log/apache2/server-error.log -f
and
tail /var/log/apache/mail.log
