EM special characters in email templates

EM special characters in email templates was created by Psonder
I'm trying to include some calculations in my basic admin notification email. However, any expression using the < > symbols don't pass validation and the characters are replace with the html equivalents (< by < > by >).
I know this has previously been an issue within HTML editors, which has been fixed since 2.05 build 140803, but it still appears to be a problem within the template editor.
Is there a setting or trick that I am missing? I would like to avoid creating new variables for these expressions. Example expression below:

Thank you for your reply. We are not quite using the latest version, but 3.17.3.
I have tried lt/gt but it does not validate.
