Problems sending invitations, Error Openssl, smtp encryption

Since last Week we get the following error when trying to send survey invitations:

Extension missing: openssl<li>SMTP Debug Ausgabe:</li><pre>2020-03-31 14:19:15 Extension missing: openssl </pre>

The current Limesurvey Version is 2.51.1+160901
We didn´t change anything in the settings and it worked perfectly before that. If we deactivate encryption and dont set the port specifically, it works. I attached both settings as screenshots. Our question is why it does not work with activated enrcyption, but does work when enrcyption turned off? Also we never had issues with openssl so why now suddenly?

Maybe someone had the same issue and could help us out here

Thank you

Your current version ( 2.51.1+160901) hasn't been changed since 2016 (for more than 3 years. As it worked before, the problem can't be LS related, because you said you did not change anything with LS.

Our question is why it does not work with activated enrcyption, but does work when enrcyption turned off?

Well, the error message says it all, doesn't it. The OpenSSL Extension is missing. So if you don't have the extension to encrypt, you can't encrypt.

Something on your server must have changed. Ask your server administrator or your hosting company what they did to thhe openssl extension.

You have submitted the credentials of that email account unencrypted. You should change the password since it might be exposed to a third party.

I already told them and they´re looking into that. Will post the result of that when i get a reply. It just seemed strange, because it never happened before.

So our hosting company told us, that there was an update of OpenSSL, which is only supported in php >5.6 and we currenly use the 5.5.38 version, so we have to upgrade. Are there any Problems with Limesurvey, when Upgrading php?
We probably want to use 7.2 and install that on a test environment first, but we are not sure yet.

Thanks for advice.

Probably depends on the version of LS you have installed. If I recall right, LS3 and LS4 should be fine with PHP 7, the 2.x versions might cause trouble. But not sure.
