Hi everyone, sorry I'm not sure where to post this topic, anyway here is my situation :

I've created a survey thanks to Limesurvey hosted, it is finished and activated succesfully but the URL link that I was given is not working. My survey is in open access, I specified no participant restriction, but when I send the link to a friend to let him try it, it doesn't work...

Please I need some help, I need this for an university research, it's very important....

Is your LS installed locally via XAMPP?

To share your survey it has to be installed on a web server.

WAMP or XAMPP is a webserver, on your own computer. You can access it from your computer via localhost, and in some cases via IP within your local network.

However, it should NOT be possible to access your computer from the internet, because of security issues. You don't want that.

You will need to rent a webserver / webspace with a hosting company. They will give you a webserver (watch out that your package covers all the requirements of Limesurvey) and then install Limesurvey on this webserver. Your questionnaire is not lost. You can export it as .LSS file and import it on the new installation that is accessible via the internet.

Packages like WAMP or XAMPP are for development purposes and for testing on your own computer, but not for an productive environment.

If I understood the post in the french forum correctly, he/she is looking for free hosting, which will probably not work out. If you want to run LS reasonably well, you probably have to spend at least 5-10 Euro per month for a half decent hosting company.

Indeed I don't really feel like paying god knows how much just for a form... And it's not supposed to be available for a long time, I will give my research paper in end of April so it would for just a month, I don't even know if I can rent a webserver for just a month.

So the FREE pack for LimeSurvey won't give me a webserver ?

Well, unfortunately life isn't free and most things cost money. There are exceptions and limesurvey is one of it. You can download it totally free of charge! Isn't that nice of the developers? All the work they put into the software and you don't have to pay a dime! This is the community edition, the software you can download and install on a web server, for free. And there are no limitations with this version. However, the evil people who are offering webspace though, they want money for their service. Each month! So you have this option. Download limesurvey community edition for free and find a hosting company where you can install and run limesurvey on.
Or you can go with limesurvey pro, which is the SaaS version of limesurvey. The good guys from limesurvey offer you a hosted version of limesurvey. So you don't have to install anything. You just log in and create or import your questionnaire. But, as we learnt before hosting companies want money for their services and they even want it from the good guys from limesurvey. Crazy, I know!
So they are charging you a few bucks to cover their costs and earn a little something, so they can continue to develop the software for free. Now because they are generally good guys, they even offer you a free package, with some limitations. Now it is up to you to decide: go the self-hosted route and find yourself a hosting company. They will rent you a web space for just one month to two, don't worry.
Or you go with the specialists from limesurvey with a hosting that is specialized on limesurvey, from the guys that develop limesurvey. It is up to you. For just one project, during one month I'd probably go with limesurvey pro hosting, because it is the quickest and hassle free approach. Especially as you don't seem to have a lot of experience in installing a web application (no offense).

But as nice as you can be, I'm a student which means I don't have much money as you can guess. Now having the free pack limit the responses to 25 participants which isn't great so I'm kind of stuck :') The pro version seems to be a good option (you defend it pretty well btw), but there are several kinds that can be very expensive for me and you didn't mention which one would be suitable for my issue... The only one I could afford would be the basic one, for one month, is this pack offering a hosting ? I mean if I take it, I won't have to rent a web server, find a hosting company or anything ?

Of course not, because nobody of us is employed at Limeservice. We all have our own Limesurvey Free Edition hosted somewhere (own server, or shared server of a web hoster). You see, I pay €8,00 monthly for my website, php, mysql, databases, unlimited traffic, 6 domains, e-mail, security, and so on.

You have several options:
1. You have to invest time.
Best for you, as you always repeat that you are not willing to invest money into your future:
Do your survey paper-pencil. Run around and ask people. Afterwards type the data into a spreadsheet and analyse them.

2. You have to invest brains.
There are a lot of web hosting packages, e.g

Here you get everything you need, "php", "mysql", 25 databases, ... for €0,99(month)
Of course you have to upload the Limesurvey package and install it.
But that's easy if you take the time to read something about it.

3. You have to invest some more money.
That's the very easy way for somebody like you without knowledge.
Use the Limeservice Starter edition for €29,00, the basic edition only allows 25 respondents.

But the more I read here the more I am sure, you should do it "paper-pencil". It's really the cheapest way.
