We have just (finally!) upgraded to 2.50+ (build 160718) and one of the things I'd like to be able to do is allow the use of images in a question type, for example, select any 3 that you feel do not belong to this group.

Is this possible? I know I can do it with multiple choice/lists etc using text, but I'd like to use an image instead of the text/

If I understand you correctly you just want to substitute the answer text for example in a multiple choice question to a image. You could place something like this in the answer box <img alt="" src="/path/to/the/picture" style="height: 150px"/>. If you upload a picture to your survey through the question text menu you can easily get the /path/to/the/picture from there

To expand a bit on Deusdeorum's answer a bit...I also insert a hidden span element with the answer text so you can see that in the exported data.
