Internal Server Error: CDbConnection failed to open the DB connection. was created by mskrajner01
Some users are getting the following error when trying to access my survey:
Internal Server Error
CDbConnection failed to open the DB connection.
An internal error occurred while the Web server was processing your request. Please contact the webmaster to report this problem.
What might be causing this? And how might I fix the issue. My limesurvey installation is hosted by hostgator. everything appears to be fine to me

I answer at the LimeSurvey forum in my spare time, I'm not a LimeSurvey GmbH employee.

Is your mysql on the same server as the website (localhost) or is the mysql server separate? The error message states that Limesurvey can not connect to the database. As it seems like this is only for a few respondents, I guess there are temporary connectio problems between the webserver and the database server.

yes, the mysql is on the same server as the website (localhost).
i am hoping it is a temporary issue. it seems fine when i test it on my end (on three different computers), and others continue to be able to access the survey. i

When using shared hosting there can be some peak times where the DB suffers from a too high load and thus connections may fail.
Usually the related error message is "too many connections" but it is strange if you only face that "failed to open the DB connection" error randomly because usually the connection details either work fine or they do not.

I had a similar problem so to fix it, in /application/config/config.php I changed localhost to 127.0.0.1 and it worked.
