Dear LimeSurvey Community,

So switched all my PHP applications to a production server and LimeSurvey is having issues connecting through smtp.
I have been trying to debug this problem for more than 3 days now, normally I'm the guy helping out on forums :).
I'm probably missing something here, something is going over my head.

before I dump the SMTP log I want to note that:
port 25 is blocked so we are using port 465 for UNENCRYPTED SMTP and port 587 for TLSv1.2.
I'm not using TLS for PHP applications but allow unencrypted SMTP over port 465.
Please note that our company mail server is an exchange server. Any known problems with that?
Yes, our web server is whitelisted for SMTP relaying.
I'm using PHP -v 7.1.20-1 are there known problems with v7 vs v5?
LimeSurvey Version 3.14.3+180809 was modified but PHP MAIL and other core features were untouched.

I also want to force PLAIN authentication to see if that makes a difference since my other applications use PLAIN or LOGIN.

(Yes the credentials are OK they work everywhere else but not in LS)

Please post a screenshot of the mail settings in LimeSurvey.
And is that the complete debug logfile? I don't see 465 set as port.

What exchange server version is used? On what windows server version is it installed?
Did you e.g. try to send and receive an email via SMTP/IMAP/POP3-Client (e.g. Thunderbird)?

Are you a student conducting a survey? If yes, tell me why you use LimeSurvey?

Dear Jelo,

These are the same settings as all the other PHP Applications. Our exchange server is on a UNIX system, Its a stable mix between postfix and OS calendar services.

Yes, the client can connect after an IP whitelist. (Thunderbird)
And the frustrating part is that the mail server doesn't even show that it's trying to connect in access.log.

Kind Regards,

Exchange-Server are running on Windows only. So with "Exchange" you seem to mean a different kind of software. The debuglog from LimeSurvey is stating Postfix under Debian as a mailserver.

What access.log you're looking at? On which server?

The connection is between php (phpmailer is the library/class, which is doing it for LimeSurvey) and your mailserver (Postfix).

To troubleshoot the issue I would create a new email account on the mailserver.
Then I would open a telnet session on the server, where LimeSurvey is installed and check the different ports.

telnet mail.example.com 25

Then I would use Thunderbird to access the mailserver with the new account.
What settings work and what don't work.

Depending on the results, it may be a filtering component between the limesurvey server and the mailserver (can be a ip/port block). Or the mailserver has a invalid SSL/TLS certificate.

I would never try to connect plain via 465. You cannot freely change ports and transport encryption level.
If your mailserver is postfix, you can see the different concepts here:
wiki.debian.org/Postfix#Postfix_and_TLS.2FSSL

To me LimeSurvey is not the rootcause of this issue.

Dear Jelo.

If we add an account to a client we select exchange and it will connect directly with CAL/CARDDav and the SMTP mail server via STARTTLS starting on port 25

What access.log you're looking at? On which server?

The postfix mail server.

I would never try to connect plain via 465. You cannot freely change ports and transport encryption level.

Port 465 was never enabled. we use 587 for pure TLS. BUT because port 25 is blocked on our web server (in and outbound) we used 465 as a backup that allows unencrypted SMTP. This is the reason for enabling Port 465.

telnet works on port 25 and port 465 without any problems on a pc with port 25 unblocked

Yes, we use self-signed certificates that's why we don't use SMTP because if we use the exchange format we use our Let's encrypt certificates over https. which are verified.

We used to change common_helper.php to accept self-signed certificates but that doesn't seem to work anymore. Because we get a host not found error as shown below:

Why are you talking from the client side. If you are the administrator, you should be able to tell what setup is used on the server side.

What access.log you're looking at? On which server?
The postfix mail server.

Are you sure? access.log is normally a webserver logfile. Postfix isn't using access.log be default.

telnet works on port 25 and port 465 without any problems on a pc with port 25 unblocked

Which is not what I asked for. You need to check that from the webserver, where LimeSurvey is installed.

If you can access the mailserver via Thunderbird via SMTP and IMAP/POP3, it is fine.

There are currently too many things, which differ from a typical installation. I don't see a bug related to LimeSurvey be the root cause.

The IPs of the Webserver, where LimeSurvey is installed are whitelisted in the mailserver?
You can access the mailserver via Thunderbird via SMTP and IMAP/POP3?

You shouldn't try to go the plain connection or selfsigned route.
Will bringt more and more issues. PHP is validating certs from 5.6 on.
If your mailserver isn't accepting unencrypted traffic on port 465 and 587, you won't be able to access the mailserver from PHP.

Every time Limesurvey tries to connect it doesn't show up in any log file
/var/log/mail.xxx or /var/log/mail/access.log

port 25 is BLOCKED on our web server.

telnet webserver->mailserver port 25
telnet mail.mydomain.com 25
Trying xxx.xxx.xx.138...
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection timed out

telnet pc->mailserver port 25

EHLO 86.87.234.230
250-mail.mydomain.com

220 2.0.0 Ready to start TLS

Connection to host closed.

so we use port 465 where the web server is whitelisted to relay (which I said multiple times now)

all our other applications on the web server use plain authentication because it fails at CRAM-MD5
so I need to know how I can force plain authentication.

I have read, that you stated that port 25 is blocked. You also stated that an Exchangeserver is involved. You might get the idea, why I like you to check the things and provide some more information.

jelo wrote: Then I would open a telnet session on the server, where LimeSurvey is installed and check the different ports .

Port 465 and 587 are still not checked.

telnet mail.mydomain.com 465
telnet mail.mydomain.com 587

But since you don't fell my approach is helpful I suggest let's wait for others to join this thread.

Dear Jelo,

I got frustrated and changed the postfix config myself. I symlinked the TLS certificates from let's encrypt that httpd is using to /etc/postfix/tls and gave postfix permissions to read. We now have a valid TLS cert on our mail server for SMTP over port 586

auth method is LOGIN so I'm good with that.

I'm so sorry for wasting your time. I'll get the finance department to make a donation to LimeSurvey since we have been using the core for a very long time.

and yes this guy was looking in the access.log from apache in the apache2 folder...

everything is working now, Thank you for trying to help. it was a configuration error nothing to do with LimeSurvey.

Yet again sorry

Kind Regards,
Sepp
