Negative number as question code

At the moment a negative number can not be the question code.
This is a real limitation for questions that have plus and negative question answers (i.e. semantic differential).
Now we have to convert the codes to numbers before processing the data in Excel.
Can it be considered to allow this in the future?

Auke

a negative number can not be the question code

correct...
The use of underscore is allowed and could be useful in the need of proceed easy changes in a spreadsheet column.

Yes, but you can't do calculations with it.
If it is negative you can.

Can somebody tell my why this is? I find it to be good pratise to use negative codes for N/A answers like...

- not applicable
- don't know
- don't want to answer
- no answer

What is the limiting factor here? None of the result tables seem to have any UNSIGNED data types...

I guess this has also to do with Expression Manager. When Expression Manager was implemented, the rules for the question codes became a lot stricter.

What you could do is write a new value into an equation question automatically.

E.g. {if(question1==1,-2, if(question1==2,-1, if(question1==3,0, if(question1==4,1,2))))}

Something like that. Then you use the equation instead of the actual question to analyze.

We usually use something like 99, 98, 97, for these cases.

Have a look at the manual! It is a really valuable source for information. Here some helpful links:

Thanks for the reply and the workaround! Still, would be interesting to know why this is limited exactly...

Ben, the post is about the question code, as far as I understand it, here we are talking about the answer codes.

So while there is a good chance that it won't be added, it is quite a different topic than in your link.

No problem. I guess the response will be quite similar to the one for the posted link. ;-)
