Hi, thanks for all your excellent work in Limesurvey. I need help or clarification with „Email bounce tracking system“ settings.

- with „SMTP“ email method “Email bounce tracking system” works excellent for me
- I need to use PHP email method because of limit for e-mails sent by SMTP within my webhosting provider.
- but when I switch to the default „PHP“ email method, I have these problems:
- 1) return-path in e-mail header switch automatically to the admin e-mail - and does not respect settings for bounced emails (both global setting for bounced e-mails, nor specific settings for single survey)
- 2) then bounced back emails are sent to the admin e-mail, not to the specific deliveryfailure e-mail address
- 3) and “Email bounce tracking system” does not work (there are no emails within the inbox of specific deliveryfailure e-mail)

So, my questions are:
- does „Email bounce tracking system“ requires „SMTP“ email method?
- why PHP email method don´t use in survey settings defined “email address for bounced emails” and puts in email header as “Return-path” admin e-mail address? (or is this just a strange behavior of my installations?)

Additional info:
Tested in Limesurvey: a) 2.05 build 141 123 (today upgraded), b) 2.05+ Build 140915, c) 2.05+ Build 140911.
Server: Apache/2.2.25, PHP/5.3.28-pl3-gentoo, IMAP c-Client Version 2007f.

Not an answer to your question, but possible another headache to add:

If your provider has a limit for emails sent by SMTP I am quite sure he has a similar limit for emails sent via PHP, because this is usually a bigger source of spam than SMTP.

I would check this before I would do anything else.

Hi, thanks for fast reply. I have checked it before - limit for by SMTP sent emails is much more lower then for emails sent by PHP.

Don't remind where exactly, but apache can force Return-path for php. Look at php.ini file maybe.

PS: i use php method with Return Path
