To be honest your way isn't bad at all.

I know! That is why I suggested it.

I think even from a research point of view I would prefer it, because it is a lot easier for respondents to mark the brands they know than to mark all brands in some way, especially with a list of 400 brands (who the hell will answer something like this?). I would split this question in various questions anyway.

You must be doing something wrong, because here it works perfectly.

here a screenshot:

And here a sample question group with the two questions:

I think this should make things clearerl

So I tried your question group, that is I imported it, changed ur options with my predefined label set (my options) and it didnt work. Is it possible that there is some kind of limit of answers (mine are 325 atm, maybe I should break it down to smaller samples?) in limesurvey?Or is it possible that my dual language (greek and english) has something to do with it?
This is really annoying cause it should be straightforward :(

Edit: Something I forgot, which could be irrelevant. Every time I 'quick add' or add from a predefined label set I get an error called "failed to delete answer" and then when I use back in the browser it sais "subquestions successfully saved". Could be relevant..

Thank you for all the help.

Okay this works! It just needs less answer options for some reason. Maybe there is a max_limit of answer options somewhere in the code, idk. In any case thanks for all your help and hopefully I will not need to bother you no more :)

New problem :(

As I said above, it worked with around 80 companies (answer options). But when I made a new couple of questions (one multiple, one array-text) for the next 80 companies, nothing happens. Anything I do I cannot make it work. Moved it to different question group, changed names, question id's..I am sorry for repeating myself but this is frustrating..

I don't know what else to do. Now even the questions that do work, fail to work if I edit the answer options (either add manually, replace from predefined sets etc.). I am starting to think this is a database issue and not some option in my questions :( And I think it's connected to the "cannot delete answer" message that keeps popping up everytime I edit something.
Anyone knows what to do?Should I start a new survey alltogether?

Maybe you are running in some kind of limit of your database. Where are you hosting your limesurvey?

Can you export your survey and post it here?

Thanks for your help once more!I am not hosting it yet, it's stored locally. I am using XAMPP to do that.
Here is the survey structure file. Bear in mind that you it has greek and english as languages. The questions bothering me are the last two. Also, you will need to put something in question 9 in order to progress.

As the base language is Greek it is quite difficult to find the correct questions, as even the numbers do not fit with the English version. I will see if I can make my way trough.

I found something that might be the cause of your problem: The answer codes in question G4Q4 and E45 must be exactly the same.

However, there was a 51 somewhere in the middle and missing later, so I haven't looked much further.

You can use Excel and the quick-add feature to add long lists quite quickly and save. In the first cell you put the answer code and in the second cell the answer itself. Then copy all answers and answer codes and insert them into the quick add field and it usually recognizes automatically the answer code and the answer and inserts everything correctly. Additionally you could also just copy the first question to use it as a base for the second question. You just change the question type and make the necessary modifications.

Let's hope that this is your problem, because this is easy to solve.

Dammit, and I went over them so many times :)

I did what you suggested, new question, quick add, copied the question and changed it into an array and an array(text). This time, on the first case it just showed me all the answers of the 2nd question, like there was no filter option (even though the hidden was selected and the filter was set). When I changed it into array(text) more things happened. First, the 63rd answer option dissapeared and 305 was put into its place. Seems there is some conflict with changing the question type and answer options. Then it also did not filter the answers :(

But looking at your survey I think you will be running into serious problems with the limit of your database. Currently you do have more than 1400 subquestions already. Each subquestion will need a column. But depending on the database implementation your database might only support 1000 columns!

I think the fact that you have a list of over 400 companies twice in your survey (and for two languages - don't know if this impacts as well) is probably "breaking your neck".

I tried to add another array filter group for testing and for the second question I couldn't add more than one subquestion for the horizontal scale. I assume that I am running in the limit of the database.

But when I try to add them, Limesurvey says that they have been added sucessfully, but then they don't show up. This might be actually a bug in Limesurvey.

I was also starting to think that this is a database issue, because honestly all the other options are what they should be. And you are probably right because I remember in my tests that the two questions were working in an instance when I had around 80 companies to select from.

My problem is I really need to include all of these companies, but how can do that without going outside the database limit?

Edit: Dammit I am blind. In that error message I was talking about it actually sais "Warning: Input variables exceeded 1000. To increase the limit change max_input_chars in php.ini in Unknown on line 0"

OK, seems like the problem is also the chosen question type. You want to use array text as the second question with 3 columns.

So not only are you using 400 subquestions in 2 questions, in the second question the database must store 3 different options for this AND they are text fields which need a lot more space in the database and thus reduce the possible number of columns drastically. Only for this second question limesurvey will have to create 1200 columns (3x 400) for answer options, and those columns need reserve a lot more space.

I tried to do it with only the two questions, and even there I couldn't add 3 or even 2 horizontal subquestions for the second question. With a normal array question(radio buttons) and there I could add 3 answer options.

I think the way you want to create your survey will not work with limesurvey and as the limit is due to the database limits this will probably the same case for all tools out there.

One thing I noticed is that when inserting stuff via quick add there is a 4 added to some of the numbers, which is really weird. I need to have a further look at this to see if this is a bug or something I am doing wrong.

I am not sure how the languages impact this whole scenario with the database limit. I assume that the questions and answer options are saved in a different table, but I don't know if this also has an impact on the result table.

I think I will simply add a url link at the end of the survey (excluding these 2 last questions) linking to a new survey containing those 2 questions.

Now, since I'm kinda bad at this, do you think that even by themselves, these 2 questions (with their 325 answer options) will create the same database issues in a new survey?

Edit: On your considerations about the language and its influence to the size required, I think I will actually create two different surveys for each language. That should, if there is an impact, reduce the database requirements. Thanks for that, it's a nice addition.
