I just figured out that using "other" in a only select one (radio button) lists does not trigger a mandatory response in the text box that accompanies the word, but when using "other" in multiple choice (check boxes) lists it does trigger a mandatory response. Is there any way to get the "other" option to require an answer in both instances?

You should be able to set a question attribute to achieve this, see docs.limesurvey.org/Advanced+question+se...er_comment_mandatory

For List Radio types, there is a setting under "advanced Settings" to make the Other box mandatory
