Can anyone please tell me what mechanisms Lime Survey has in place on anonymous surveys to prevent people from multiple voting ?
Is it just limited to dropping a cookie ?

Have a look at manual -> tokens.

Even when using tokens you can set your survey to be anonymous so that there will be no link between token table data and survey answers.

I think my question may have been misunderstood.
I'm not talking about taking things 'off' to keep the user anonymous and 'protected'.
I am talking about adding data elements on such as session id, ip address, vote date/time etc
Can Limesurvey do that ?
If you don't store any data elements that would enable duplicate votes to be identified, then a poll is pretty unreliable!

LimeSurvey can store IP, refURL, start time ...

Set survey not anonymous and it's done.

And LimeSurvey use cookie to disabe repeat survey pass.

BUT !

Token is the best solution : one unique password for each participant (survey anonymous or not).

I don't explain why IP is a bad solution, you can find yourself if you work in a company.
