Problem with email bounces

I have set up a survey, I sent out email invitations to 50 addresses.

I received one auto-reply message, but no bounce emails. Just to try it out, I put in a couple of bogus email addresses and did not receive any bounce messages. I'm wondering if I need to do something to enable getting them.

(I am using 1.90 and PHP for email.)

Should I try using sendmail or qmail instead? And how would I go about doing that, would I have to install something else?

I think this depends on the configuration of PHP. What happens if you use SMTP?

where might I configure the PHP settings?

as far as smtp goes, I have not been successful at getting it to work, I get the below error. I have tried both my gmail account and my regular account hosted by godaddy



# Error Message: SMTP Error: Could not connect to SMTP host.SMTP debug output:

SMTP -> ERROR: Failed to connect to server: Connection refused (111)

I'm not sure how the bounce emailing ( en.wikipedia.org/Non_delivery_report ) in Limesurvey works in general, but doesn't that just mean you get a "the user doesn't exist" or similar message from the email provider?
So when using test email addresses like "This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it." you won't receive a bounce email, because the "wreoughrewough" domain won't exist. If you use "This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it." for testing, you should receive bounce emails.

That is part of my problem, I sent to domains I knew existed but to users I knew should have bounce back.
