I have a survey with multiple sets of questions with a part A and part B.

For example:

1.A
1.B

2

3.A
3.B

In the above example, the maximum count of questions answered is 3.
1.A and 1.B must count as a maximum of 1 when either one or both questions
are answered. The same for 3.

What approaches can I take to determine the number of questions answered?

I have a working version using an equation question but looking to see if
Lime Survey has an easier or better approach.

You can use Expression manager to count answered response.
For all question type this can work

{count(that.A1.NAOK,that.B1.NAOK,that.A3.NAOK,that.B3.NAOK)}

Unsure for comments checkbox : but it must count answer for comments od for checkbox.

As long as we do not know your way to calculate the number of answered questions, we are not able to see if there is a better or easier way.
