Hi. I am new to LimeSurvey. How do I go about changing directory permissions of folders (/var/www/survey/tmp)?

Changing the permissions depends on the server where the program is installed.
If you server is a Linux machine you might use chmod (chmod 777 name_file to "open" permission for the installation and chmod 755 name_file to "close" again the file immediately after the update).
For information on chmod see: www.computerhope.com/unix/uchmod.htm
Cheers, elo
