Looping

Looping question, questions groups.

A loop can contain one to many questions/questions groups and is connected with a list of items with will be changed with every iteration of the loop.

The list could be predefined in the first place or an dynamic list can be build during the interview.

Typical example is when asking for brands.

What brands you can think off (open text items)?
What brands you know (predefined list)?
What brand you would buy (subset of selected list above).

Dynamic list = Randomly choosen up to four items from the last selected items.

Now up to four items are applied to a loop of questions.

Today you would need to precreate every loop by hand and hope that the list to choose from is not changed during programming ;-) Copy and paste errors all the way.
A five minute job with looping can turn into a 24h task without looping.

To allow skipping of certain loops would be another feature used in connection with conditions.

I don't expect that such a feature can be added via the plugin api of 2.1.

Looks like now many others are looking for this feature.

The gap between other commercials solutions seem to be to big. The users which need theses features are already on the big survey solutions. The others are just happy with the solid performance and have no time issue to implement workarounds.

This is quiet an old post, but I am facing the same issue today. For example, we are doing an ongoing study every two weeks and ask people the same four questions for 25 items that change every week. Currently I would need to create 25*4 questions and edit them every two weeks. That is in no way doable. Therefore, we still use a very outdated and old commercial version of another survey software. I would really, really like to get all our studies moved to LimeSurvey and therefore still hope for a future release including looping of questions.

Let's open a feature request and put some money behind.
I offer 250 USD as a start. When specs are compatible, I would raise the amount.
How much will you offer, since you are using a commercial software. BTW, which one?

@jpalmbeck:
"That is in no way doable."

Of course it is doable, it is just really annoying. ;-)

@jelo: There is another user (DOwen) who was asking about looping today. You might want to recruit him... :-)

BTW: I never use looping in surveys, cause I hate looping. When I see these surveys, where you have to tick the brands from a list, and then all brands are looped through the same battery of questions, you know what hell is.

Why I am asking for that feature? I want to see, how theses things evolve. Time to market pressure vs. workaround land.

I don't recruit for features. If they find this post and reply, they have passed the test. If not, get along.

@jelo I could certainly back up the request with another 250 USD. Right now we are using a very, very old version of keyingress we bought > 10 years ago. Well it works, why spend money for something new. The survey is only used internally, so it doesn't matter how it looks and old fashioned it is. I always recommend LimeSurvey to my students, because of its flexibility and would never spend money for another piece of closed source crap (putting aside that it takes month to acquire external funds).

@holch well, let me put it that way: how in the hell do I tell my colleagues that we should use another software that takes an hour to modify every other week instead of seconds?

btw. survey software doesn't only exist in market research so there is more than just "brands" and "marketing".

Hey jplambeck, that is why I put a smiley at the end. I just found the "it is not doable" a little too definite. :-)

Just because it is not about brands and marketing I don't think the loops get any more interesting. :-)

And I agree, it is a feature that is very interesting and can reduce the workload quite a bit. Sometimes there is just no way around it. Sometimes you just need the loop, because you won't get your information without it.

But I agree with Jelo to a certain extend. There are people out there that create questionnaires "from hell". They will collect data with it. The question is, if this data has any value. But this is not a problem of looping or not. This is a general problem of survey design and I guess here is not the place to discuss that.

@holch yeah, you are right - "not doable" was a bit too much. LimeSurvey is in this case probably just the wrong tool for it, in order to do it in a timely fashion. But I still think it would be a useful addition to LimeSurvey, if in any way possible to add it.

Actually in psychological tests you find a lot of looping through batteries of questions especially in pre-mid-post test environments. Having to change the same thing multiple times always asks for human errors. That's why I actually like loops in these cases.

And yes, I agree completely that there a tons of people and companies out there creating awful surveys. That is part of the reason why online market research is dead in my opinion: The people are just sick of surveys like these and do not even look at the good ones anymore.

Good news for LimeSurvey :( The software industry is focusing of Enterprise Feedback instead of surveys. More short questions directly send to the customers and users. The shorter surveys will be coming, when mobile first hit the surveys. Limesurvey is not offering enterprise feedback tools at all, but two good templates for a yearly amount of money would help to please the eye a bit more.

Don't get me wrong, I love LimeSurvey as a flexible survey tool, even though I rarely use it for typical online research. I also think that LimeSurvey is on the right track with the theme and plugin API. Just look at WordPress: It used to be just a blog software and nowadays you can easily build everything from an online shop, a forum, a wiki up to a whole intranet portal with it - just by using plugins and themes.

I just think that in this case of looping it won't be possible to do it as a plugin. But I might look into that at another time.

There is a discussion going on about plugin. When you look at Joomla CMS there are parts programmed as plugins but always shipped and updated with the core installation. These "plugins" cannot be deactivated. The programmers want to be able to switch on and off parts of the code without stopping other parts of Limesurvey keep on working. Which will help to program and debug faster.

But back to the topic. A looping feature is wanted. 500 USD are in the pot, right? Limesurvey 3.0 is in the making. Who wants to see looping in LS3.0 and what can everybody bring to the table.

Let's see how this thread evolves.
