Can I give people an identifier for their answers? Ie. some string of letters from which you can pick out the answer row in the database. One example would be the date they started taking the survey. Another example would be a newly-generated string, perhaps generated by the expression manager, which then got saved to the database.

This could be presented in a late question (in the copying, using a LimeSurvey replacement field, or else in the default answer). Or it could be presented in the final page.

Hi,
You can use {SAVEDID} keyword (already recorded in the db because it's the respondant unique ID for this survey)

You can try to retrieve in an equation question or just display at the last page some adaptation using other, prefix and/or suffix or other existing {keywords} or formula :

Some examples:

Prefix & suffix: ABC-{SAVEDID}-123
other keyword (survey id): {SID}-{SAVEDID}
Formula (date): {SAVEDID}-{date("d/m/Y")}
