A vulnerability of high severity was found in LimeSurvey which enables an attacker to get unauthorized access to files and data of your LimeSurvey installation.
The LimeSurvey team thanks Pichaya Morimoto (discovery, analysis) from the SEC Consult Vulnerability Lab (https://www.sec-consult.com/) for responsibly reporting the identified issues and working with us as we addressed them.
Affected Versions: All versions between 2.0+ (all builds) and 2.06+ Build 151014
How to fix: Upgrade to LimeSurvey 2.06+ Build 151016 or later.
We stronlgy advise to upgrade to the latest 2.06+ version immediately, either manually or using ComfortUpdate.
In the past users have asked us repeatedly to revamp the administration interface and surveys. With LimeSurvey 2.50 we made this come true. On top of that we also revamped the survey templates to be completely responsive for any kind of display - be it a smartphone, tablet or a desktop PC. We had 2.50 in Release Candidate status for more than 4 months and in general we received very few bug reports from the community. At some point it became clear that waiting even longer would not yield any more considerable amount of reports, - so we decided to release LimeSurvey to new users exclusively a couple weeks ago. (For a very short time it was also available to 2.06 users on ComfortUpdate but that was not intended - we apologize for this!).
Finally with this 2.50 release we are receiving a good and wanted amount of bug reports and are releasing a new 2.50+ build version almost daily, with latest translations and latest fixes. These daily releases are there to show that we take your reports very seriously and we want you to get issues fixed as soon as possible. We are also very thankful for everyone that contributes to the translations as many texts have changed inside LimeSurvey.
To be fully responsive (we are relying on the Bootstrap framework) the new version 2.50 does not have backward-compatible templates, anymore. Also to deal with contemporary characters like emojis the requirements for the MySQL version were raised to 5.5.2 (this should not be a problem with any decent hoster)
We are asking existing 2.0x users to hold their horses for a very short while longer regarding updating to the latest version as we are still clearing update paths. You will know when it is cleared, because at that point we will start offering the version 2.50 on ComfortUpdate (as we did with previous versions) and on LimeService.
LimeSurvey 2.06 LTS being available soon
We are aware that there are many professional users who have a big amount of running surveys and it will take them some time and preparation to move to LimeSurvey 2.50. For these users we will be offering a LTS (Long Term support) version that we will provide for at least 6 months. This version will mainly include security fixes and (if anything like this should come up) high-impact bug fixes. This version will only be made available as download package or by ComfortUpdate to users who bought a Premium/ComfortUpdate package starting in March.
After 2.5 development and issue fixing has calmed down we will merge 2.5 and 3.0 to extend on making LimeSurvey even more modular for the future. LimeSurvey 3.0 is currently scheduled for Q4 2016.
Many of you already downloaded this release, tested it and gave us feedback such as bug reports or new feature requests; we thank all those users for their very useful contribution to the LimeSurvey development.
To make easier for people to test LimeSurvey 2.5 Release Candidates, we made it available via ComfortUpdate. If your LimeSurvey installation is up to date (and it should because of the security issue found last month), you will now have an update notice about it, and you'll can use ComfortUpdate to test it. If you're not interested, just remove the notice by clicking on its close button.
As said in the notification, you don't need a ComfortUpdate key to update. If you already have a ComfortUpdate key its update count will not be decreased by this update. This is because LimeSurvey 2.5 is still unstable. By the way LimeSurvey 2.5 is using most of the code of 2.06, so it is yet very reliable, and you should be able to use it for your every day work! Most people who did the move told us that the new interface is very intuitive and easy to use.
LimeSurvey 2.5 RC Home Page
In the coming weeks, we'll published a new 2.5 Release Candidate, probably the last one. It will use icons font instead of pictures, and will provide an easy way to customize the admin interface with a theme engine based on Sass. It will also provide a new template engine for the survey, based on Bootstrap, using the no-more-tables technique for array question types. So the survey templates will be responsive and will work fine on most smartphones. The more users will update to the release candidate and provide us feedbacks about it, the faster we'll publish the LimeSurvey 2.5 as a stable release.
So you should test LimeSurvey 2.5, to report bugs, to request new features, to complain about it, to ask for changes, to troll us, to thanks us or to say how wonderful it is ;-) You are the LimeSurvey users, we're doing those changes for you, so just don't hesitate.
LimeSurvey 2.5 is based on the good old LimeSurvey 2 code, but using the famous front-end framework Bootstrap to render its admin interface. So now, you'll enjoy a modern and responsive admin interface to build your survey. If you're a loyal LimeSurvey user, you will not get lost, and you'll still find all the functionalities you care and love.
The development of the new admin interface pursued four goals:
Offer a modern graphical experience
Respect the habits of loyal LimeSurvey users and the global ergonomy of LimeSurvey 2
Easy to use for new users, thanks to an alert info system providing tips and tricks.
Keep as much as possible of the LimeSurvey 2 core code to get LimeSurvey 2.5 working as soon as possible
Soon, we'll also develop a bootstrap responsive template for surveys.
So, LimeSurvey 2.5 is fully compatible with LimeSurvey 2, and you'll can update to it simply using the brand new ComfortUpdate we just released a few weeks ago...
