LimeSurvey v2 will be using more formal typographic and layout practice in the survey design.

Question numbering, bullets, quotes, check boxes, radio buttons, glyphs and other selection mechanisms will reside in the gutter, i.e. bullet lists will not be indented.

To be honest: I don't like this new way of layout. I can't say why. It's probably because you are so used to the old style that it looks somehow irritating.

Software has been way behind the type curve.
For 30 years, operating systems and apps haven't handled type well. We're all used to software indenting bullets in text editors (a la Word, PowerPoint, Open Office, etc). Latex is the only service that actually has a few default gutters for glyphs.

Finally, we're seeing some progress. This year's version of InDesign and Quark now have gutters for bullets and drop quotes... among many updates to handling fonts and type rules.

The new US ballot design employs a similar technique (with an aligned text layout and inputs in the gutter). Testing shows dramatically improved error rates. We'll run micro tests as well.
