With many thanks to Ben_V, the answer was:

Install Error

I was having the same issue and after an hour of hacking around in the code I have found what you need to do.

Open application/controllers/InstallerController.php and around line 1106 in the _getDsn function you will find this:

$dsn = "mysql:host={$sDatabaseLocation};port={$sDatabasePort};dbname={$sDatabaseName};"


Change to this

$dsn = "mysql:unix_socket={$sDatabaseLocation};port={$sDatabasePort};dbname={$sDatabaseName};";


And the install will run as normal but in the host box instead of localhost put /tmp/mysql5.sock

Works a treat..

Can you tell us what did you have in application/config/config.php after the installation.

Somethink like that :
Maybe a checkbox or a select with connection method can be a goos idea.

PS: don't need port for unix_socket:seem good enough.

That sounds like a good idea, 1and1 are one of the largest hosts in the UK, Germany and across Europe so I guess there are many others such as me who are not programmers but want to have a go.
