Increase PHP's memory limit, e.g. to increase it to 128M you could try adding:

memory_limit = 128M to your server's main php.ini file (recommended, if you have access)
memory_limit = 128M to a php.ini file in the LimeSurvey root
ini_set('memory_limit', '128M'); in your config.php
php_value memory_limit 32M in a .htaccess file in the LimeSurvey root

Hello!
Are there are any rules on how many participants at a time can access limesurvey / how much memory does a survey use up? Do you have experiences with running a survey for 40 000 participants (and up to few hundred users filling up the survey simultaneously)? What are the minimum server characteristics / how the server should be configurated / is Bluehost offer enough? Thanks!

Instructions added to the general FAQ: docs.limesurvey.org/General+FAQ#Fatal_er..._Allowed_memory_size

filips: Please create a new topic. There once was a topic about ressources and Limesurvey but that seems to have been deleted.
Try creating a new topic with a meaningful headline and ask for feedback from other Limesurvey users. I could then mark that thread as sticky at the forums.

In which line of each file should one place these additional parameters?
Is "$" or some other sign at the beginning necessary?
