I also need to get rid of "Choose one of the following answers". I have read the manual and FAC and forum, but I am not very good in these things. (And englis is not my mother language.)
The administrator has disabled public write access.

For the *, you can use some css.
.asterisk{display:none}

For tip, you have an option in each question to show or not the tip.
