We copied the basic template before trying to edit it. However when we tried to upload a picture to have it appear on the page we got an error:

Error
An error occurred uploading your file. This may be caused by incorrect permissions in your /var/www/html/limesurvey/tmp folder.

does this have to do with the person logged in to LimeSurvey?

You need to set the correct permissions to the tmp folder and all folders within the temp folder. This has more to do with linux than LS.

Use your FTP program to set the correct permissions for the TMP folder. Should be something like 755 or maybe 777

Should this permission be set for everyone?
What other folders should we ensure that adequate read and write permissions are applied to? So that we do not keep running into this permissions problem.

No, once you give the permission via chmod, this should be fine. What permissions to set should be explained in the installation process. But those permission need to be set on the server, the chmod has to do with the linux server, and only indirectly with LS.

You also should be conservative with the permissions and only modify them where necessary - thus I would leave everything as it is, as long as you don't run into a problem.

Following the installation instructions, you should be fine (of course this also depends on the configuration of your server):

Often it is very useful to input the eror message into the forum search field. You'd have received several hits I guess.

this is the cmd i used

chmod: missing operand after `777/limesurvey/tmp'

What happens when you put a space between 777 and the path, like this:
chmod 777 /limesurvey/tmp

this is what happens

[root@cust-5973zc1 ~]# chmod 777 /limesurvey/tmp
chmod: cannot access `/limesurvey/tmp': No such file or directory

which i know isn't true because the tmp directory exists under

/var/www/html/limesurvey

So you probably have to put
chmod 777 /var/www/html/limesurvey/tmp

Depending in which folder you are within the console.

Don't you have a server administrator that could take care of those server related issues? Try to ask him. They are usually nice guys and will help you out. By him a beer after work and he will be happy. Probably. ;-)
