There is no option in the GUI.

Since most mailserver and maiclients are ignoring these notifications I cannot remember any webapplication which provided such a feature out of the box.

Limesurvey uses phpmailer as class.

The config file shows some preparation for reading confirmation

application / third_party / phpmailer / class.phpmailer.php

/**
* Sets the email address that a reading confirmation will be sent.
* @var string
*/
public $ConfirmReadingTo = '';

I would open a feature request if you don't want to look through the php code.

What might be interesting is to have a look at some of the email marketing tools out on the market. There are ways to determine if a email has been opened (I don't know how reliable though) or if a link in the survey has been clicked (but I guess when using tokens, this is already registered in LS).

I believe that the tokens only show that a particular token has not been used. Isn't that correct?

If the token link has been clicked, it will show in the results table as an incomplete answer. So if the person just clicks but doesn't respond the survey, it should still be showing in the results table, thus the click is registered.

If it is clicked, then one will know the message was received. Although I can't imagine a recepient clicking and not doing the survey.

But if the token is not clicked (worse case), then one only knows that the token was not used. One will not know if the recipient even got the message. And, of course, that is the real issue.

In practice it is very, very common for people to click the link and not finish the survey. People are curious, they want to know what things are about and then easily loose interest. But obviously this is not your problem.

I think most email marketing tools include a little image into the email template. this image usually is unique and might not even exist really and when it is called on the server, this is measured as an open email. Of course this only works if images are shown/allowed in the client. I don't know how reliable this is and I also don't know if there are other, new, better measurements. Haven't followed the development there for a while.

Right. The one thing that I would promote is for people not to click on links they don't know about. That leads to spam. We need to make sure that the survey is recognizable as being legitimate.
