Please note that the email validation will probably fail on email addresses like:

john@thisorthat.amsterdam which are also possible now.

Who can alter the validation regex so these email addresses will positively validate?

Since I'm bad at RegEx I use regexr.com/ to see what the whole thing is doing.
I'm confusing RegEx dialects too.

isn't matching any email at all in RegExr.
Confusing with RegEx will never end ,-)

"Clever" validation drives me mad. I once had to fill out x pages online and than the system was not accepting my correct email-address. Or a shop wouldn't take my order cause the bank account number had an "unusual" pattern. It was a correct bank account number but the programmer of the shop knew it better. The little shop was Amazon and it took them a long time to correct this.

Our surveys may not have that impact but using all this clever stuff can cause pain on the other said (as my posts do from time to time).

These email-adresses are possible and technically valid. Not that they are the most common once, but since developers sometimes want to rule the world with one RegEx these are nice testobjects.

Hi Ben,

This post is useful. However, I am trying to validate the email address which is a subquestion in one of the multiple text question types, What code do I use under Sub-question validation equation? Also, I need to validate the phone number in the same question type.

you ask how to include the expressions?

Well, that's easy.

In
manual.limesurvey.org/Using_regular_expressions
you find some pre-defined expressions and in

manual.limesurvey.org/Expression_Manager#Implemented_Functions
you find the function "regexMatch".


Just enter in your subquestion validation something like:
regexMatch('[YOUR REGULAR EXPRESSION 1]',Q1_SQ002) && regexMatch('[YOUR REGULAR EXPRESSION 2]',Q1_SQ004)

Expression string with quotes and slashes.
