Any other way to make my survey play sounds beside embedding them? was created by davidspivak
Hi,
I realized embedding audio clips into the survey isn't a very good idea, since some participants aren't very tech savvy (e.g. old people, my mother), and if they don't have the correct plugin to play the embedded audio, they won't be able to install it.
Is there another way to do this that could bypass this problem? like a button that says "Play audio", and once you press it, the audio clip just starts playing? audio is 6mb in size and 7 minutes long, by the way.
Currently I have an embedded audio clip that starts playing automatically once the page loads, but apparently that's not enough to take care of the problem (plugin etc.).
Thanks!
David

Well, this is a very general problem and has little to do with LS.
If they don't have the software installed to play the sound file, then they can't. Quite simple. This problem you will have if it is embedded or not (if they don't have an audio software on the computer, or don't have speakers, or don't know where to switch them on, etc.) then this won't be possible.
So you basically have to find something, which most people do have installed. What kind of audio file do you try to play?

Thanks for the reply!
It's mp3.
EDIT: this is the code i'm using:
I tried running the survey from a friend's computer, but she didn't have the plugin required to play the file. IE then said we should install a plugin if we want this file played, so we did so. Unfortunately, that caused the survey to reset and we got kicked to the main page (myusername.limequery.com).
It would be great if there was a solution for this, since I don't want that to happen to other people who are participating in my survey.

Hello,
You can use some free flash player maybe.
Like:
- flv-player.net/
- www.alsacreations.fr/dewplayer-en.html
- flowplayer.org/
You can integrate it via ftp in the template, and integrate the script directly in the source of the question.

I actually used flv-player.net.
This is the code I used:
[cody]<span class="hide">
<object data="/upload/surveys/88377/flash/player.swf" height="20" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="200">
<param name="allowFullScreen" value="false" />
<param name="loop" value="false" />
<param name="menu" value="false" />
<param name="quality" value="low" />
<param name="movie" value="/upload/surveys/88377/flash/player.swf" />
<param name="FlashVars" value="mp3=/upload/surveys/88377/flash/a1.mp3&autoplay=1&showloading=always" />
</object>
</span>[/code]
I hid the player and made it auto play as soon as the page finished loading. No technical problems encountered.
