How can I extract a data map?
I searched datamap, data(mistake!), map, position, location... I can't find any mention of it in the forums.

I need to send my tab company the starting position for each question and length of each response.

Is there an easy way to pull this out?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Bitter!

I don't think that there is a datamap feature implemented in LS.

One other thing: The requirements that your tab company has sounds like they want a flat ascii file, but limesurvey doesn't really produce flat ascii files, as far as I know. You can export CSV files, but they are separated by a ";" I think.

uh-oh. You're exactly right - they want a flat ascii file, they said that.

I'll check with the tab company and the client and see if we can use SPSS this time around.

Has this ever been discussed?
Doesn't anyone need this?
Am I talking to the wrong tab company?

and then you wonder why I'm Bitter...:)

Thanks holch.

Well, honestly, in my opinion flat ascii files are so outdated. They are still from the time when there were punch cards. But in the market research area flat ascii files are still quite common. In times of personal computers and modern software I find this a little "stone age", but I am not an expert on this anyway, so I might have overseen something.

I am sure that you can create a flat ascii file from the exportet LS files. I was looking into this before, because I had several request already, but never actually needed it at the end of the day.

Just had a quick look and if you export the file in excel as .prn, then it gets exportet as a flat ascii file with spaces. So the data for each question starts and ends at a certain position.

Just made a test and this is what was created:
1blablabl 1a
2lakda 2aa
3ladlaa 3aaa
4laksla 4ssss
5laalaksl 5ss
6laksja 11s
7lksdjfas233as
8laksdjf 23asas
9ladskfj 34aass
10loasdasd 12ass

from this excel:

1 blablabla 1 a
2 lakda 2 aa
3 ladlaa 3 aaa
4 laksla 4 ssss
5 laalaksl 5 ss
6 laksja 11 s
7 lksdjfas 233 as
8 laksdjf 23 asas
9 ladskfj 34 aass
10 loasdasd 12 ass

Hmmm, the forum seems to substitute the additional spaces.

But you can test it on your own anyway.

there is still no data map though, you'll have to create it on your own. But this can be quite quick, depending on your data structure.
