Yeah right, I ve been thinking about that too.
It's just that the comment box openning right next to the list is much more convenient (from the respondent point of view), and looks better too (for my colleagues at least).
Also, i believe you can replace the "-oth-" code in the data file before you import into SPSS. [open the data file with notepad, ctrl+H, replace the "-oth-" by any code you like, provided it's always the same. Mind the variable width in SPSS though, it might not accept more than X number].
Such workarounds are fine for me, but some might find it too technical...
