LimeSurvey Security Advisory 2008/06/22

For the last couple months the LimeSurvey project has done a lot of self-imposed security audits on the LimeSurvey code base. (Thank you to the Ubuntu Server team for pointing out first issues and giving us a head start.)During this process several security issues have been fixed in the source code which include:Issues where variable manipulation was possible when register_globals in PHP is activatedSession Data injection manipulation Permanent non-permanent XSS-issues where an attacker could try to gain access by injecting own javacript code into the applicationSession related issues where a possible attacker could take over the session and/or gain higher access privileges Most of these issue were already fixed for 1.71 stable. (Affected versions: 1.70+ (all builds) and older)On top of that we fixed two moderate issues for the current 1.71 release which wereTwo XSS attacks for security flaws in the IE6 browser. Session Fixation attackThank you to security advisor Michal Tresner for reporting.Exploits in the Wild: No known exploits yet. We strongly recommend to update as long it stays that way! Solution: Update to the latest LimeSurvey 1.71+ Build 5147 or later version available from http://www.limesurvey.org (http://www.limesurvey.org) This security advisory refers to CVE-2008-2659 - LimeSurvey XSS candidate

LimeSurvey Article on German Linux Magazine

The special issue (http://www.linux-magazin.de/heft_abo/sonderheft) on the 12th of July (tomorrow as of this writing). This issue about web software topics will sport an article about LimeSurvey named 'Refreshingly Easy' (roughly translated from German). It contains a tutorial how to use LimeSurvey to create your own online survey and that way you can find out more about your potential customers. If you are German and want to get a fresh introduction to LimeSurvey don't hesitate and buy this magazine online (https://shop.linuxnewmedia.de/store/sh02/SH20025/de) or at your next kiosk. We are very proud since this is the first time a magazine (you know: the one with real paper) is writing about us - expect more to come. btw: The Trophées du Libre (http://www.tropheesdulibre.org/?lang=en) where LimeSurvey made first place in the 'Business Management' software contest. Thank you for this support!

LimeSurvey 1.71 Released!

This new 1.71 release of LimeSurvey marks the last four months of continous work and development where numerous fixes and small enhancement have been done in the code since version 1.70(+).

Not only we added a few new features, like optional PDF generation of surveys, but also our users helped us with 6 (six!) new translations - some of them are full translations, like Korean (which has been created by a South Korean Cyber Crime Police Unit - would you believe that?), and some of them are just sprouting, like Persian. Thank you very much to everyone helping keeping the (http://docs.limesurvey.org/tiki-index.php?page=LimeSurvey+1.x+Translating+LimeSurvey) translations (component/option,com_wrapper/Itemid,79/lang,en/) up to date (http://docs.limesurvey.org/tiki-index.php?page=LimeSurvey+1.x+Translating+LimeSurvey) and adding new ones!

It's also very important to mention that we did alot of security audits on the source code so LimeSurvey is even more safe to run and use. We strongly recommend to update to this new version to get the safest, best and most stable version.

Also we will continue to release weekly Plus versions to always be able to deliver the latest translations and fixes as soon as possible. However new features will be expected only for LimeSurvey 2 which is already in the making and where a first internal alpha development step (http://docs.limesurvey.org/tiki-index.php?page=LimeSurvey+2.x+Installation) is reached. If you want to help with design (http://design.limesurvey.org) or download and upgrade (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=74605) to the latest shiny LimeSurvey version!
