I'm wondering if this is possible with Limesurvey? I want to have a list of 8 choices. The users will rank their top 3 choices... 1-2-3 from the list of 8.

I saw a post that it might not be possible with 1.71+. Is 1.80 RC1 able to do this? If so, is it stable?

Hi sam,
this is possible with LS1.80 RC1. This is a release candidate so it isn't fully stable.
In LS1.80 the ranking type question now has a max_answers attribute to limit the number of choices a user can make.

For a smal donation I can adapt your files to make this work with the version you are using.

Great to hear, that a limited ranking will be possible in the next version (1.80)! But what I actually missed was a limitation of obligatory choices.

In my scenario, we used the ranking question in LimeSurvey to record the user's choices according to a given set of menu items in a user-test of an intranet software. Well, sometimes the user just finds the correct menu item immediately, but sometimes the user has a trial-and-error strategy and searches within other areas of the intranet.

So what we urgently need is a limitation of the mandatory items and not the all-or-none check, that is currently applied. It's just a no-go to be forced to click on all items that were actually not choosen, just to be able to continue the survey!

Perhaps a more abstract description of what I mean. If you have to choose teammates out of a set of 10 players, the question could be: “please choose a minimum of 2, but a maximum of 5 players ranked by your preference”. I would like to be able to set a minimum and a maximum of possible choices for the ranked list. At least there should be an option to limit the obligation to one item instead of all.

If you could tell me, where exactly I could add such a functionality by myself with not too much effort it would be cool. And it would be great if you would consider adding a mandatory but open ranking in a future release.

You can add this as a feature request to the bugtracker. Please describe your problem/solution as detailed as possible.

If you donated a certain amount we might be able to integrate a min_answers question attribute into the next 1.80 release.

You were right, it was the min_answers feature that seems to be missing. We want the respective question to be obligatory but would also like to accept 1-4 Answers. The problem is, if you set the question as obligatory, all elements must me chosen, which is certainly not what we want.

Sounds good. We can even write a bill for implementing new features if this helps.
