Dear LimeSurvey user,

Today I am asking you to support LimeSurvey with a donation. This might sound unusual: Why does a successful Open Source Survey tool like LimeSurvey need to collect donations?


LimeSurvey is an Open Source GPL web-based Online Survey tool with an active development community of about 20 people performing support, development and bug fixing tasks. With the exception of myself, everyone is a volunteer.

LimeSurvey is widely used. It has been downloaded from SourceForge over 150,000 times in the last year alone. It is designed to operate multi-lingual surveys and has been translated into 60 different languages. This is a global project. Our developers span the globe, working from Europe, Africa, Asia, Oceania and the Americas.

The code behind LimeSurvey is very powerful and complex. We rely on volunteers to code new features in their spare time but some features are simply too big and complex to be developed quickly by one person at a time. We don't want you, our user, to wait years for a new feature so we are seeking donations to pay for some development so the following features can be developed more quickly:

  • A plugin system for question types/languages/authentication/import/export so users can create their own LimeSurvey plugins without having to integrate them directly into the core
  • A documented XML-RPC Rest API to remotely control LimeSurvey from other software. It will support almost all administration functions for better integration with other systems and automation of LimeSurvey
  • An enhanced assessment system (scoring)
  • An enhanced reporting system allowing the creation of specific reports (formerly statistics) using templates for each survey and assign them to a specific audience (Public, user, user group).
  • A new question designer with greatly improved usability
